Jack the Ripper was never caught, because he was never identified. Sherlock Holmes solved his every case, and always identified the criminal. Both lived in the Victorian age, and the same city, London. It was inevitable that their paths would cross, and cross they do, in this book. Sherlock Holmes investigates, and identifies Jack the Ripper. They meet in person, and then- read the book and find out. The cover image is an authentic Jack the Ripper victim crime scene photograph. $3.99.
"Sherlock Holmes and the Napped Children" http://amazon,com/dp/B0075VKKTI. British detective, classical. Blonde blue-eyed little girls are being (kid)napped, and Scotland Yard Police Inspector Lestrade asks Sherlock Holmes for help. Holmes captures the napper, but he takes poison, and the children's last chance of being rescued is gone. After thinking all night about it, Holmes comes up with a very different, novel approach, and with Watson's help solves the case. This case's difficulty, and the very different, novel approach to solving it, make it one of Sherlock Holmes's most interesting cases. The cover image is a Sidney Paget original drawing of Holmes and Watson for Strand magazine, where the Sherlock Holmes books and stories were first published. $2.99.
"Sherlock Holmes and the Alien Abduction" http://amazon.com/dp/B006ATXXTA. British detective, classical. The cover image is a film clip of Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Courtesy of Republic Pictures. $2.99.
"Sherlock Holmes and the Mutilated Cattle" http://amazon.com/dp/B006OBWMXC. British detective, classical. What the Ebook Industry Needs Is...
As an Indie author, editor, publisher, promoter and marketer of 37 ebooks I have become painfully aware that at present the ebook business is sick. Signs of this are the dissatisfaction of almost everyone in the business, and declining paid sales and profits. The ebook business needs a change made to restore it to good health. At this time there are 5 major players in the ebook publishing and marketing business. They are Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Smashwords.com, Apple.com and Kobo.com. My commentary on this subject applies to all 5, who I term "the Big 5."
I begin by saying the ebook business is a new and different phenomenon, made possible by very recent technological advancements, primarily the PC and the Internet. Like all new and different technological advancements, persons attempting to make use of them are troubled by inexperience. Due to inexperience mistakes are inevitably made in application. Over time mistakes in application are discovered the hard way, by painfully experiencing their consequences. That is happening now.
The capitalist business model has proven to be by far superior to the communist business model, and the ebook business's financial problems have resulted from its having discarded the capitalist in favor of the communist model. With the capitalist model you sell and make a profit, or you don't sell. With the communist model you make continually available at a loss. Because it is relatively easy and cheap to format, publish and market ebooks, the Big 5 format, publish and market any and all ebooks free. They get paid only when the ebooks sell. The result is an enormous number of ebooks on the market, that do not sell. In addition Amazon.com has its Select program, allowing Indie author members free ebook downloads for five 24 hour periods every 3 months. The free downloads are available in unlimited numbers. As a result of Select, there is a flooding of the market with free ebooks.
Due to all the above, a marked decrease in paid ebook sales has resulted, to the detriment of both the Indie authors and the Big 5. In addition, the Big 5 have the continuing expense of making many non-selling ebooks constantly available for purchase, and the expenses of servicing the Indie author support questions, reporting, and forums where available. The large number of published ebooks, many without adequate editing and formatting, harms the reputation of Indie books. The many fake "ebook reviews" by friends and enemies, hinder customer ebook selection.
There is a simple solution to all the above difficulties. It is to charge a small monthly fee per Indie author, of say $5.00, for the privilege of having ebooks formatted, published, offered for sale, sold, and commission paid. This simple requirement would at one stroke go a long way towards solving all the present difficulties. It would bring in needed revenue for the Big 5, making possible improved Indie author support services. It would reduce Big 5 ongoing expenses, since authors without sales would drop out. It would work to increase paid sales, benefitting both the Big 5 and Indie authors. In short, it would benefit the Big 5, the Indie authors, and ebook customers.
In addition, I suggest that the free unlimited downloading of ebooks should be ended. Ebooks could still be given away as marketing tools, but only in reasonable numbers.
It seems to me that putting the above solution into action would help everyone in the ebook industry. The only downside is that large numbers of ebooks would no longer be readily available free. Customers would be encouraged to pay for their ebooks. Then the capitalist business model would be reestablished, and all will be well. Or at least a lot better than it is now.
The foregoing is my commentary.
Phillip Duke Ph.D. April 18, 2013.
Science Problems. Send your answers to [email protected]. An accurate and fairly complete answer wins a free Phil Duke ebook of your choice.
Swimming on the Moon. The Moon's gravity is one-sixth that of Earth. In my science fiction ebook "Moon Base Colony" http://amazon.com/dp/B009LNGW3Q the Moon colonists have constructed an underground swimming pool. The question is, when the colonists try to swim in the Moon pool, will they sink, or float? If they float, will they float higher, lower, or the same that they would on Earth? Or will they just sink? On Earth most people float in fresh water, with about 95% of their body submerged.
WHY does a body fall? WHY does a solid body released near the Earth's surface fall towards the Earth? Note that the question is why, not how. Sir Isaac Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation says how, not why, so it is not the desired answer. In Sir Isaac's famous "letters to Bentley" he indicated clearly that he did not believe in action at a distance. Hint: Einstein's basic explanation is acceptable. The statement "space is curved" is NOT acceptable.
You may be interested in my science based ebooks "Starship To New Earth NOW," "MOON Base Colony," "Life On Other Worlds," "FOLLY of the Hydrogen Bomb," "Principles of Flight,: and "KARMA." The 5 Sherlock Holmes ebooks may be of interest, especially the best selling "Jack the Ripper versus Sherlock Holmes." Good luck with the science questions!
WHERE does the energy for gravity come from? What Sir Isaac called the force of gravity is for example the energy source for hydroelectric plants- the force of falling water due to/from gravity turns the turbines/generators that generate electricity. According to the hallowed Law of Energy Conservation "Energy cannot be created or destroyed." Then the force of gravity which is converted into electricity, must itself have an energy source, If so, what is it? Or does the hallowed Law of Energy Conservation fail here? What is going on? Hint: The water cannot fall without a force acting on it, Or can it? If it does, then is Newton's first law of motion, that a force is required to produce all change in motion, not valid here? If so why?
How will the balloon move? A helium filled balloon is floating attached to a strong string firmly tied to a child's firmly attached car seat, in a rapidly moving car, on the Earth. Suddenly the car brakes are applied hard, and the car abruptly slows down. Does the balloon move with respect to the car seat? If so, how, and why?
Chicken Joke.
My humorous chicken ebook "Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?" http://amazon.com/dp/B00AKN1WO0 gives a number of answers to this perennial question, along with chicken jokes, cartoons, and situations. Of course only the chicken knows for sure why she crossed the road, but it seems safe to say she did this "to get to the other side." It is rumored that the chicken did this, to get away from her rooster husband.
The Featured Book Of The Month is "Sherlock Holmes and The Man In Concrete" http://amazon.com/dp/B00JFXUBF2. The cover image is of famous British actor Jeremy Brett, now deceased, who was noted for his excellent portrayals in depth of Sherlock Holmes. This is the shortest of the Sherlock Holmes works, having been written for a contest specifying no more than 2500 words. It won a contest prize, and is available now for the low introductory price of only $0.99, in English, Spanish and German..
